Ground Zero – a superficial tourism attraction?

In New York, United States of America, since 2001, “Ground Zero” is understood to be the site of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the September 11 attacks. After this event, the site of the disaster has been changed into a memorial for the victims. Nowadays, where the twin towers where located, is being constructed a new Center. It will be formed by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the Memorial Plaza, two ponds where used to be the old Twin Towers, Main Station WTC and four numbered towers.


The area where the disaster took place, the Ground Zero, is now one of the most visited tourism destinations of New York. The Memorial and Museum are here to recall the events of the 11-S. Thanatourism, the tourism of horror and disaster has always existed and many visitors of the Ground are motivated by the morbid curiosity. The issue that we are facing nowadays is the following:

Is the Ground Zero transforming into a superficial tourism attraction? Is it losing his initial meaning?
